I decided to have my arms painted by Romanian artist Tudor Tiron and wanted to share with everyone the process we have gone through so far:

Sketch 1) from Tudor showing his idea for the arms in a Gothic style:

Sketch 2) was a little more advanced and we sorted out the like s of chevron which should have been a chevronel as per the blazon and a few other little bits and bobs. However I didn't want to interfere to much too allow Tudor artistic licence.

Sketch 3) is the final drawing before painting commences with the arms.

4) Painting starts and the first layers of paint are laid down but there is still quite a lot of work to be done.

5) Another stage in the process of the progression of the painting.

6) Painting of the Helm.

I have tried to show by use of a series of images, the concept behind the painting of my arms from initial sketch, to the finished artwork. I hope the next image I add will be the final finished painting.

Absolutely gorgeous! The detail on the helm is incredible! I really like how he drew out the initials in the corners. Stunning work, that's a definate center piece!!

While on the subject of heraldic art, I'm starting to collect quite a variety of renditions from different artists. Other than personal taste, what is the best way to display them all? Would it be better to display them almost like decorations, as in one or two different renditions up at a time, and then take them down and put others up? I don't think my wife will give me one full wall to display them all at once, but I may get away with one or two here and there!

I can hardly wait to see the finished painting Andrew, yes all the letters are in the form of dragons, if you look close you can see the heads.

Why not start an album either on your PC (keeps the wife out of your hair) or in an adapted photographic album. I am sure the other folks will have ideas.

I have just received the final painting of my Arms in a Gothic style painted by Romanian artist Tudor Tiron.

This is great indeed, and, in my oppinion, Tudor is one of the best heraldic artists in the world today!

Very nice, John. I am sure what you say is true about the computer image not doing justice to the artwork. My Scottish patent is that way--the paint looks almost luminous in real life.

There is much to like about your painting. I like the more exaggerated waves sitting below the ship and on the helm--almost coronet-like. I like the small pennon (or whatever) on the ship projecting above, with the badge projecting below. So much of great heraldic art is in the way it is composed.
