After reading the page - I think the University could have easily said the first one is our coat of arms and the second is a stylized shield for use as part of the University Logo and as a stand alone logo.
Thereby "keeping" both, per se.

Re: Display by one's spouse
I'm not particularly skilled with the technology -- past computer illiterate, more like computer dyslexic -- maybe you or SKS could move or duplicate your last post & this reply as a new thread? "Pro's and Con's of Cadency?" or some such new title? I don't know how to move these things around eithe...

Re: Display by one's spouse
Both. Over the years I've come to prefer the relative ;) simplicity of undifferenced family arms, but to each family (or even each individual within a family) their own preferred approach, at least in the US context. There are arguments both ways, both symbolic and artistic; but neither approach is...

Re: Display by one's spouse
(Continued). Shifting gears, differencing between immediate or near relatives bearing the same surname isn't necessary in the American (or pretty much any other non-Scottish / non-Canadian) context, though it's certainly permissible for those who want it; that's of course your family's call if the ...

Re: Display by one's spouse
Michael, You've got it on the basic concept of a married couple using the non-armed surname. If you read very early in the thread - your original "as if" appeared to be referring to a woman with arms in her own right. There is no "as if" in that case. She is treated as any other person with arms. It...

Re: Display by one's spouse
Cathy, Not cadency then. So the differencing would not be intended to give any indication of the armiger's relationship to the head of the family, simply that there is some sort of relationship? One of the ways that it could be done is through use of different tinctures, though the combinations are...

Re: Display by one's spouse
Chris, When I say differencing, I am not saying cadency - cadency is a form of differencing which I generally do not advocate with the possible exception of the label. Michael, one must leave the mindset of "heraldic heiress" entirely, IMHO. One is and heir to arms or not. note that nowhere did I in...

Re: Display by one's spouse
Actually, what I am attempting to think through is using no more than 4 quarters, the surname always in the primary quarter. Next nearest relative's arms in second quarter. it rolls kind of like this: One parent with arms - the arms pass to the next generation as is if surname is same, if surname ch...

Re: Display by one's spouse
Justifying it on "custom" is, merely, wrong.. The customs which we inherit from our forbears may not coincide with the views of some people alive today but that does not make them wrong. The great majority of people in the western world inherited their surnames from their fathers. Their children ha...

Re: Questions about the arms in my family
Kasper, I think before ruling any options out - we should first have to find a member from the Netherlands so the customs there can be adhered to. However, there are places where arms are in use from or by both sides of the family (Spain comes to mind). A note has been sent to someone we hope will w...

Re: Display by one's spouse
If both parents have arms in their own right, Then are you advocating that the paternal line's arms have priority to the maternal line? That's a bit of a reflection of a rather old legally discriminatory sexist practices. Justifying it on "custom" is, merely, wrong... I prefer simpler arms as well, ...

Re: Display by one's spouse
One minor quibble, Michael, "she would then be an heraldic heiress in her own right" (in several places above - or generally said).. NO, She'd be the bearer of her own, unique arms and no more an "heir" to those arms than a man who has assumed his own arms. ;) (studiously avoiding the term "armiger"...

I may put that on my "list" of things to do, Michael. I suspect though that my lack of languages and current list may push it off for some time.Michael F. McCartney wrote:You might also want to learn what they signified to see if it's consistent (or at least not undesirably inconsistent) with your own use of it.

Re: Display by one's spouse
Good evening, all. I have a question that I should like to address to those members of this body who are married: What display, if any, do you permit your spouse? I have seen the lozenge employed for widows, but what provision is there for a wife to display her living husband’s arms? What forms cou...

Re: Helms and other head coverings???
I am among those who believe some alternatives to the traditional helm may have merit - particularly academic regalia. Generally, however, I do believe that alternative headgear needs to be consistent with being alternative, in that.. a Fighter Pilot would not wear a crest or mantle.. so if one wish...

Label of 2 and Label of 4
Not quite sure this is the place, but looking through this book on Portuguese Heraldry: Livro Do Amerio-Mor we found an example of a label of 4 and a label of 2. My daughter's arms have a label of 2 which we thought was an "innovation" per se.. but we now find it's a historic one... It's my un...
