                                                P. Hock Jr.

The lightning bolt represents the armigerís occupation as an electrical power engineer who built ships for the US Navy (shield shape) but who was also proud to have served in the US Army (commoner's helmet). The rampant lion represents ambition, reflecting his passion for fully engaging in whatever was his focus at any one time; the whole achievement is modelled after the Norwegian coat of arms pertaining to his maternal grandfather's ancestry.

Throughout his endeavors, he never lost focus on perfecting the 64 Thomistic Catholic virtues imperfectly represented in the natural state by the feathers on the lion and mirrored in the shield on full display for the supernatural state of the Trinity. The Trinity symbol on the shield represents an invocation of supernatural protection needed for spiritual battle, while the red and white flowing mantle is an invocation of protection of his family, both ancestral and progenial, by the blood and water which flowed forth from Christ's side.

The motto, "Agere Sequitur Esse: Arete," or "Activity follows existence," is a scholastic principle meaning one knows what a thing is, i.e., its essence, by its actions. The scholastic principle in this context can be summed up in one Greek word, "arete," which is the virtuous perfection of man as God created him.
