Label of 2 and Label of 4

Post by Kathy McClurg » Mon Oct 14, 2013 9:35 pm

Not quite sure this is the place, but looking through this book on Portuguese Heraldry: Livro Do Amerio-Mor we found an example of a label of 4 and a label of 2. My daughter's arms have a label of 2 which we thought was an "innovation" per se.. but we now find it's a historic one...

It's my understanding the artwork is done by "the master Arryet" as stated in the book

Technically, it was still innovative, since you developed it unaware of its previous use (somewhat similar to not violating a patent if you independently developed the technology unaware it already existed). Be proud that you created something, even if it already existed. :)

Aye, but given that it existed in this instance - it does make me wonder if it existed elsewhere and if so, how did it go out of "vogue"

You might also want to learn what they signified to see if it's consistent (or at least not undesirably inconsistent) with your own use of it.

I may put that on my "list" of things to do, Michael. I suspect though that my lack of languages and current list may push it off for some time. ;)
