Scottish Family History Service Project Newsletter

Issue 03 July 2006

Thank you for subscribing to the Scottish Family History Service Project Newsletter and welcome to the third issue. The Scottish Family History Service Project is a joint initiative between the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS), the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) and the Court of the Lord Lyon (CLL) to create a family history centre - the ScotlandsPeople Centre - in the centre of Edinburgh. The purpose of this newsletter is to keep you informed of project progress and any interruptions to GROS/NAS/CLL services over the project lifetime.

Building works halted
In April of this year, the contractors working on the Project to create a family history centre - the ScotlandsPeople Centre - in Edinburgh, went into receivership. As a result, works on site have halted and the new Centre will not now open until 2007. Some works will be completed in advance of the commencement of the new contract to alleviate accommodation problems within New Register House. This includes the completion of the Dundas Search Room (formerly the East Search Room) and the small café at the rear of New Register House. The remaining project works will be re-phased and detailed information about these phases will be made available once the new contractors are in place and the dates have been finalised. Updates on the project will be found on notice boards within the buildings and on the Project Information Website at http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk

Both buildings will remain open throughout the building works. There is currently continuing pressure on the search rooms in New Register House due to the closure of the east search room, so we would recommend that you contact GROS in advance of any visit to reserve a place. You can find the contact information on the GROS website at http://www.gro-scotland.gsi.gov.uk

New centre head appointed
Dee Williams has recently been appointed the new Head of the ScotlandsPeople Centre. Dee came to the Centre from the Criminal Justice Department. Before working in the Criminal Justice Department, Dee worked at the Scottish Prison Service in Estates as Head of Strategy for the upgrade of the prison estate. Prior to working on strategic issues, Dee was a Project Manager for construction related projects. You can see a photograph of Dee on the 'News' page of the Information Website at http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/News.htm
