William Hague

Post by Sebastian Nelson » Sat Apr 06, 2019 11:38 pm

Hi all,

Can anyone here help me learn why William Hague was granted an "American Bald Eagle" as a crest?

Hello Seb,
As discussed elsewhere, he must have a reason but it isn't obvious unless of course it is connected to his middle name in some way. I wonder, as he is a "public figure" if it might be possible to write or email directly to him to ask the question? He may surprise us and be pleased to answer (many "public figures", especially politicians, are delighted to talk about themselves).

On another note, I wonder if it would be possible to either see a larger image, or if you have access to it, could you let us know what wording the College used in regard to the supporters which, being to a life peer, must surely be for his use alone and not descend "according to the law of arms"?

Many thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin,

Unfortunately, I do not have access to a larger version of this picture. I think the grant reads, in part:
...the Supporters following that is to say Dexter A Polar Bear proper Sinister A Dragon Gules ??? in the margin more plainly depicted to be borne and used by him as a Peer for Life and the whole according to the Law of Arms...
