Illus. to Rietstaps

Post by Joseph M James » Fri Jul 07, 2017 6:41 pm

After months of searching by a dedicated librarian, she was able to locate a university library that was willing to loan the 6 vol. 1903-1923 editions of the illus.to Rietstaps Armorial by V. and H.V. Rolland through the interlibrary loan system. I got the 1st. two, A thru B and C thru F. and digitized them, though I am curious about the copyright. I know Heraldry Today used to sell editions and the Naval and Military Press still sells paperback editions and archive.org. has vols. 3 and 4, letters G thru K on the internet. Does anyone have any info on this, because I tried, but couldn't find anything, plus I got tired of looking. I would like to put a selected page here on in the forum, but I think it might be to big, it's 986x1637- 570Kb. Any suggestions?

I reduced a page by 66%. This Is one of the things I do in my spare time. I use a light attached to a 6 ft. ladder,a homemade bookstand, and a old digital camera on a tripod. Once I was set up it took about 3 hrs. to photograph appox. 800 pgs,(not done in one sitting). I chose this page because in the topic below this one (Other Heraldry) is a post by Mr. Hans E.F. Amundsen and in this picture, 4 rows down are 3 coas attributed to people with the same surname.

Hello Joseph,
Are you continuing with this project? I would be glad to hear from you since we are at least in the same part of the country (more or less).
Regards from South Carolina

Yes, Kurt I'm still at it. I just finished vols. 3 and 4, so I'm ready to start P thru Z when I get the books. These books are a pain. The spines are so stiff I'm afraid to lay them flat, so I have to hold them open slightly past 90 degrees with one hand, while I photograph with the other. Because of this I can't get the pages flat or square, but I have wanted these original books for years, so I'm happy. I used to have to drive 12 miles to look at the 1967 editions. The vols. 1 and 2 look like no one has ever looked at them and the last time vol. 3 was checked out was 1968, the others appear to have never been checked out. The pages in all of them range from light yellow to very dark yellow, so I had to try different light bulbs until I could get them to appear somewhat white and some of the pages were actually printed out of square with the page. I still don't know exactly what I will end up doing with them, but until I decide if anyone needs anything from them I will be glad to share. I have included the two coas attributed the surname Alex. This is the best I could do with what I have available and yes, you are a little closer to my neck of the woods. See you in the HiN.

Hi Joseph,
Sorry for the delayed 'Thank you'. I was also familiar with these from the now-defunct 'myblazon' website that existed until recently. Possibly of interest to you and other is this link http://boutique.genealogie.com/v4/genea ... findbyname to colored renderings (albeit watermarked) of the Rolland illustrations. You can enter a family name at 'Saissisez votre name' (Enter your name) and click the 'Recherche' (Search) button. Below that are links for list of names, list of countries, list of regions, rules of heraldry, dictionary of blazoning (in French), but readable for Anglo-Norman blazons.

Re the 'Alex, Allemagne' arms, i learned that these were actually granted to an extinct Swiss (not German) family in the 1500s, the original armiger being Anton (Antoine) Alex, who moved from the canton of Freiburg to the canton of Bern on religious grounds. These arms appear in the 'Reichsadelsakte' (Imperial ennoblements) section of the Austrian National Archives and also at a Swiss site on the Internet. Would be glad to chat with you some time if you send your phone number via private message. There's a little family story of mine that goes along with this COA.

Please keep us up to date with your Rolland project. Thanks.
Regards from SC (where we all survived the eclipse)

Here's a commemorative COA for the eclipse from my heraldic dabbling

P.S. Where do you post images to get them to appear in this forum? The link(s) above work for me the the German Heraldik im Netz forum, but apparently not here.

Bear in mind however, that some sites won't allow "hot-linking" to images. if they don't, simply save the image to your computer and use the "attachments" option.
