Heraldic Flag

Post by Lance Bernadotte Miller » Mon Dec 17, 2007 11:49 pm

Dear Members,

Could anyone advise on the correct size in centimetres for a heraldic flag used by an armiger under the UK jurisdiction? I have had conflicting measurements from various companies and would value your opinion. The idea is to use it on a flagstaff (respecting the staff!) indoors, rather than on a flagpole.

Kind regards,

Lance :)

Hello Lance,
There is no overall authority for the "UK". We have two heralds offices.

Scottish flag sizes are well known and can be found here:

http://www.heraldry-scotland.co.uk/flyingherald.html

I think you will find that those of England are probably the same dimensions.

As you do not reside in the UK you may not come under the jurisdiction of either the Lord Lyon (Scotland) or the College of Arms but there is a difference between the two as to who is "allowed" what type of flag. The Scottish situation is amply explained on the HSS website page - although there is a view that there is no need for anyone to petition Lyon for permission to fly a pennon as this consists of nothing more than a display of elements of arms already granted i.e. the arms and motto. In England any armiger is allowed to petition for a badge and then is allowed to display that badge on a standard - this would be unthinkable in Scotland.

Heraldic Banner

Post by Lance Bernadotte Miller » Sat Dec 22, 2007 8:05 pm

Dear Martin

Thank you for your kind reply and the HSS website reference. Yes, what I have in mind is the Heraldic Banner; the site gives the proportions and recommends a square banner, but I'm still wondering what size to commission.

Many thanks,

Lance

I am not at all in favour of square flags - shields aren't square and square flags don't fly well.

For a personal (carrying) flag I would suggest that you consider 28 inches wide x 35 inches high. Anything larger might suggest a higher rank/degree.

A photo of the finished flag would be nice.
Sorry the dimensions are not in metric.

Heraldic banner (parade banner)

Dear Martin,

Thank you for the very useful advice, and I will certainly post a picture when the banner has been made.

I find myself in the State of Qatar, where Christmas is hugely celebrated. Wishing you and all members of the International Armorial a wonderful Christmas and a fulfilling new year!

Kind regards,

Lance
