Nice arms & crest!

Re: Questions about symbolism, in particular crayfish

Per pall reversed is a perfectly legitimate pattern for a field division, so it's a matter of personal preference. Having said which, I personally tend to agree with your anonymous herald. No logical reason, just my personal gut reaction; others may (some certainly will) disagree. Except for having ...

Hey, like any lunch counter, we can only serve the customers who drop by!

A fair share of the discussions are educational for those who are self-confessed newbies, or who don't know as much as they think ..

Re: Evan Charles McConnell Ellis-Uhls No.0466

A nice design, well drawn.
At least on my cellphone screen, the Argent and Or show as a dark grey - not much visual contrast.
(I'm guessing that the original emblazonment has metallic paints for silver and gold, which should be stunning in person!)

Re: John Alan Francis Buffenbarger No.0465

Nice!!!
One error at the bottom of the text - it's the International Society of Commoners Heraldry (Heraldry is omitted). In at least one other entry (Lange IIRC) the full name is shown, so I assume this one is just a typo.
Thanks! - we do appreciate the mention!

Re: Questions about symbolism, in particular crayfish

You also asked about "canting" - as I'm sure you've read, it means some visual reference to one's family surname, or someone's personal name, etc. Some cants are obvious - e.g. a tree for Wood (most if not all Woods in Scotland base their arms on an oak tree) or maybe several trees; or more subtle, ...

Re: Questions about symbolism, in particular crayfish

Sorry about your adoptive grandpa's failings; but don't visit the sins of the (grand)father upon his son.* Your adoptive father didn't get to choose his father, but he did choose you! And depending on the composition of your extended adoptive family, there hopefully were other, better Woods in the f...

Re: Questions about symbolism, in particular crayfish

Good choice! Hopefully (from my viewpoint as an adoptive parent) you will include some allusion to your adoptive family - perhaps something canting on your family name? But of course that's your decision.

Re: Questions about symbolism, in particular crayfish

Interesting case! Martin's comments are good advice, though IAAH isn't the only place to go. One consideration, or question, is where you live since both the heraldic customs and the national or state / provincial laws concerning adoption vary from place to place. (I'm no expert, but we have several...

Kevin - a couple of questions (apologies if already answered earlier): * You say your family name is Scheytt, but you post and sign as Wood. What am I missing? * Curious where you found the other version of Scheytt arms you just posted in your other thread re: crabs as heraldic charges. Thanks!! Mik...

Re: Patrick Michael Dipper No.0455

Agreed; but "Proper" gives the artist a broader license to use, say, a golden-brown which after all is closer to the "natural color."

Re: The Reverend Doctor Christian Dominic Boyd No.0452

Clean, simple design. Assuming the emblazonment represents his intentions, shouldn't the blazon note that the three crosses are erect or palewise? Ordinarily charges on a bend would be oriented bendwise unless otherwise specified...

Re: International Registration

Difficult to make out parts of the blazon - Google translator has, shall we say, some limitations ...but as best I can tell, sounds like an attractive design.

I'm sure there are some here who could read the original German blazon, and translate it into English blazon, if you could post it here.
