Re: Eric Matthew Motley No. 0466

Very nice design!
I do think that the emblazonment would be even better if the lion on the shield was the same white version of Argent as the lower part of the shield - stronger visual contrast with the blue on which it lies.

Re: Cheong Ming Lam No.0444

Based on discussions elsewhere (various FB heraldry forums) it seems that this fellow had previously registered the same design but with the field Argent and the stars Azure - to my mind, better heraldically because better color contrast, though he said he found the white field too plain. It occurs ...

Re: The Book-Burning Arms of the University of Chicago

A reasonable compromise. To be fair, my preference is based on the artwork, not the heraldic design; I suspect that if the two artists were switched, my preference would also switch.

The old arms are quite nice, but the new ones are to my mind strikingly beautiful!

Re: Crests and the Arms of European Republics

Lack of crests is not an error, it is a conscious decision based on local historical traditions. The only necessary item is the shield; everything else is just (hopefully attractive and meaningful) options. Most places, crests are commonly included in personal and family arms, but even there only th...

Re: Ramon Bravo Gonzalez No.0440

Depends on his citizenship and residence. If he has become a British citizen, then the Scottish version. If he is a Mexican citizen and resides there, it really doesn't matter, either legally or symbolically, since neither foreign grant has any legal weight outside of the granting/certifying jurisdi...

Suggest he do the refrigerator test first! - before pasting bookplates in his favorite books!!!

One nice advantage of Argent and Sable is that a black and white image is already in full color!

Re: Ramon Bravo Gonzalez No.0440

Interesting design! Comparing this version from Lyon) with the earlier South African version linked in this current entry, Lyon replaced the three coronets (which symbolised a Swedish connection) with three ships whose sails are charged with a Scandinavian cross. Lyon could have felt the three coron...

Re: Possible confusion between cadency and normal charge

Mark - nice work! Brian - your anonymous friend now has two similar but not identical designs (versions,) to consider - the only heraldically significant difference being Martin's boars rampant vs Mark's boars statant. Before he decides on one or the other, you might suggest a "refrigerator test" fo...

Also, could you share a bit of basic info re: your friend? e.g. surname or roots, a bit of his family history, etc.? Not looking to highjack your design process, just maybe make better informed suggestions.

Brian - your recent post re: designing arms for a friend prompted me to look at this thread from 2915. So if you don't mind sharing, what did you finally decide for your own arms?

My guess (only that) is that while you may find something similar, the chevron countetchanged likely will be different - but I could well be wrong!

Re: Possible confusion between cadency and normal charge

A couple of immediate reactions - First, a good start, but you might want to make the boars larger, to better fill the available space. Second, the crescent does come across as likely a cadency mark, given it's location and size. There just isn't sufficient space above the point of the chevron for a...

Re: New renditions of arms in various armorials

I like your Eclipse design, but I'm curious re: the arrangement of the stars - not semee, not an Orle, and one star in sinister base is oddly placed. Do the stars, or at least the ones in base, represent a particular constellation?
